History

Early history

Parent company Showstorm was formed in 2008 and since then has been developing bespoke entertainment software for some of the worlds most prestigeous cruise ships.

Game Development

Due to the platform being virtual reality, the game was quickly ushered through the Steam Greenlight programme and despite there being two failed Kickstarter campaigns. SteamHammerVR - The Rogue Apprentice was first published on SteamVR for the HTC Vive as a demo in September 2016 and then into Early Access in January 2017, its full release in August 2017 has it ported for compatibility with PlayStation VR and Oculus Touch. The development teams story, called 'Nine Months from Storyboard to Release' which gives an insight to their unique game development process and challenges was featured on 'Made With Unity' in June 2016.

Gameplay

A story based steampunk shooter style game, that takes place in Victorian London 1892, the primary antagonist, Professor Rattwurm is attempting to take over London with an eclectic army of clockwork automatons. The players task, guided by Doctor Obadiah Springhorn, is to complete eleven missions in iconic locations all over London and to save the day. For players wanting a further challenge, there are four arcade style versions of the game to try and top the Global Leaderboard. From an elaborately furnished command centre in the Airship 'Horndenburg' the story unfolds as you plan your strategy and practise with the all the weapons which are at your disposal. Using the motion controllers, you have in each hand the choice of six unique and upgradable weapons which you can switch between during battle:- The Steam Hammer, The Steam Cannon, The Magnet Beam, The Rotor Saw, The Tesla Ray and The Rail Gun, the game also allows you to use voice commands to change the combinations automatically. The gameplay takes the player to some of the most iconic parts of Victorian London, with locations such as the Tower of London, Limehouse, Trafalgar Square, Westminster, St Pauls and even the famous London Sewers. As the player completes the missions, as well as receiving upgrades to the weapons from collecting the spoils of battle, the back story of how the Professor Rattwurm became Dr Obadiah Springhorn's 'Rogue Apprentice' is revealed through wax cylinder recordings, which can be played on an Edison Phonograph located in the 'Horndenburg' airship.
